Joe Blogs Changes

Well, I have been thinking about how to make this blog make sense. As you know, I hope, the Curiously Long Posts is alive and well over at Sports Illustrated. And for a little while, for reasons that were not always entirely clear to me, I was running a mirror blog where I was essentially printing the same posts in two places.

Then, of course, my blog got hacked and I believe I was able to take it down before it handed out malware to every Snuggie loving sports fan in America.

So, now I have this easier-to-maintain blog ... which seems somewhat without a mission. I started out with the same Curiously Long Posts concept -- again reprinting stuff on the SI blog -- but I'm thinking now that this would make me a lot like the awesomely impressive WordGirl villain and criminal "Lady Redundant Woman."

So, I'm going to try to give this blog its own character ... we will see how that develops over the next few weeks. I don't know exactly how that will go, but I'm considering:

1. Guest posts.

2. More links.

3. More of a mix of shorter and longer posts.

Like I say, we will see. As you know, we here at Joe Blogs* are not always especially good at follow-through (I'm telling you, the iPad review is coming! It's coming soon!). But, this is the plan.

*Joe Bloggs, you may know, is -- well let's let Wikipedia explain: -- "commonly used as a placeholder names in United Kingdom, Irish, Australian and New Zealand teaching, programming, and other thinking and writing." I vaguely knew this, which was why I was calling the site "Joe Blog." I added the "s" to the name and changed the subtitle. Oh, yeah, things are changing now.

  1. I wouldn't normally want anyone posting here but you, Joe.

That being said, if you're ever unavailable, please offer the opportunity to any of the geniuses from FJM.

  2. When there were minor differences, I'd always liked the JoeBlog versions of your posts better than the SI versions. Also, I came more for the Snuggy posts than the HoF posts, so SI.com never felt like the right place for me to read your posts. Even at the risk of redundancy, I hope you'll keep this blog alive and well, Joe. I typically stop by here for links to the SI material...

  3. please just leave it as it is. i subscribe to the rss feed of both blogs, so i don't mind the duplicate posts. the readability here is way better than the godawful-designed SI site.

i don't need another link aggregator.

  4. Guest posts on blogs are a sure way to get me to stop subscribing to said blogs. I read blogs in general, and this blog specifically, because I enjoy the personal voice of the blogger.

  5. One request - links to all your SI stuff as I would prefer to "one stop shop" for all my Joe-goodness.

Also rather than guest bloggers why not a link and a short blurb from you about why we should read it.

  6. I agree with davidpwcrowe: I would much prefer links to guest posts.

I love all of Joe's posts, but it really comes down how much time he has. I wouldn't think it would be time-consuming to repost everything here, or at least post the links, but apparently it is. I think we as readers need to appreciate that Joe's employer is Sports Illustrated. This blog and the extra posts are essentially handouts to us, because we don't pay anything to read them. So Joe, while I would love for you to keep posting daily at a blog solely dedicated to your posts, you don't need to drive yourself into the ground just to give us exactly what we want in the most convenient way. As long as you keep blogging in a place that I can get to, I will keep reading.

  7. Simul-post SI articles here...with extras. Us old-school JoePoz readers deserve that much. OK fine, we don't deserve anything, but pretty please?

  8. No problem here with guest posts.

I don't see why more content would be such a problem for people. If you're averse to anything not by Joe (for whatever reason), then, uh, don't read it. It's like having extra dessert on the table -- it can't really be a bad thing.

  9. Please restore the old topics if at all possible. It was such a wonderful collection of essays and blips.

  10. Joe, I love reading your posts -- whatever the topic. And would welcome (infrequent) guest posts if they were endorsed by you. And I am eagerly anticipating the story about the guy that yelled at you on the plane. And maybe some coverage of the Royals AA League Champions??

  11. "If you're averse to anything not by Joe (for whatever reason), then, uh, don't read it."

I would have agreed with this until Nate Silver ruined 538 by bringing in additional contributors. It dilutes the voice of the blog. It's like having Lebatard and Mariotti on PTI.

  12. Joe, please, just stuff from you*. Links to your SI stuff would be welcomed, but I would miss this site if it ever disappeared.

*Unless, as previously suggested, you could get some or all of the FJM guys to write something here. I sure do miss them.

And of all the promised posts, the one I most would like to see is (as also previously suggested) the one about the guy who yelled at you on the airplane.

  13. When a national sportswriter of your caliber drops a WordGirl reference in the middle of his blog, something clicks into place in the cosmos.

    Don't ever change, Joe.

  14. Not sure anyone getting something free has a lot of room to make requests.

I'm excited to read whatever you post.
